Emotional scenes as hospital staff applaud carers for ninth week in a row

Incredible gestures of thanks were carried out across Merseyside tonight as we clapped for carers and key workers for the ninth week running.

Scores of people came outside their homes once more to applaud our heroic frontline staff.

At 8pm on Thursday night families and staff outside of our region's hospitals clapped and praised our carers.

Earlier in the day, England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty said that the death roll across the UK had fallen to "roughly the rate" of "an average winter".

Sadly some of these deaths occurred in the Liverpool region, with St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust recording three new fatalities in its latest update after several days of no new deaths.

The show of support came as lockdown restrictions eased slightly across England.

Wirral Council Deputy Leader Jan Williamson tweeted: "Aww just seen my very elderly neighbour clapping with her Patterdal Terrier barking along. Still makes me emotional."

There were also hugely emotional scenes outside of Aintree Hospital.

A large banner was held outside the hospital saying thanks as staff gathered outside once again.

Heroic staff in PPE also gathered at the doorway of the hospital with smiling faces to show their support.

Wirral Council also shared a touching picture of Jan, from Moreton, who had knitted dolls of key workers for her window to say thank you.

In a video posted online, a little girl shouting "thank you NHS" as You'll Never Walk Alone played.

As well as people across Merseyside, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was pictured outside of Number 10 applauding.

Earlier in the evening Health Secretary Matt Hancock also announced a new coronavirus test that gives results in just 20 minutes is being trialled in the UK.

The swab test does not need to be sent to the lab and would show if someone currently has Covid-19
