To complete the Emotional Rescue quest, you need to unravel the mystery surrounding the Realm door and gain entry to the Inside Out Realm. There are quite a few steps in this process, so here's a complete walkthrough for completing the full quest.

Pick up the memory that fell out of the Realm door

To start, pick up the memory that dropped by the Inside Out Realm door when you tried to open it. After interacting with it, approach Merlin by the door and have a chat with him about this strange situation. He realizes you need to evoke some powerful emotions to find your way inside.

Cook any dish that makes you happy

Venture to any cooking station around the valley, including one you've placed down yourself or one of the two you can find in Tiana's Palace in Chez Remy. Interact with it and select any meal that brings you happiness. I chose to make Aurora's Cake, since I think it's a very fun dessert, but any dish you like will do. Cooking up a meal starts to fix the memory, but you need to mix in some sadness, too.

Take a picture of a Night Thorn in the valley

Find any pesky Night Thorn growing around your village. Once you've located one, equip your Phone from the Royal Tool wheel and snap a photo that features it. Doing so adds just the right amount of sadness back into the memory, so you can now head back to the Inside Out Realm door in the Dream Castle to see if it works. Interact with the Realm door to transfer over the memory, then head through to enter the Inside Out Realm.

Talk to Joy

You've made it inside Riley's mind, and Joy is waiting to talk with you. Approach her in the middle of the room near the emotion console and interact with her to initiate a chat. The console has been overloaded, and Joy needs your help to fix it up.

Search the Realm for parts and reinstall them in the console

To repair the console, you need to find some parts scattered around the Realm. All of the parts you need to find are as follows.

  • Curiosity Sliders behind the orange couch.
  • Envy Button near a dark purple door.
  • Broken Caution Connectors in the tunnel.
  • Broken Caution Grips by the crafting station.
  • Curiosity Adjuster near the ramp in the back corner of the room.
  • Broken Caution Sliders, which can be crafted at the crafting station using the Broken Caution Connectors and the Broken Caution Grips.

With all the required items gathered, return to the console by Joy and interact with it to transfer them over. Once you've repaired the station, talk to Joy again to determine what needs to be done next. Another issue occurs, so follow Joy over to the memory wall to see what's going on.

Use the big red routing control buttons to align the flippers horizontally

Your next task is a bit of a puzzle that involves using the two massive red buttons to get the flippers aligned. To get them in sync, interact with the button on the left side first to drop the green flipper. Then, move over to the button on the right to flip both the green and red flippers up together.

Use the routing controls back near the entrance to align the flippers

Follow Joy over to another memory wall by the Realm entrance to get to work solving a second puzzle. Interact with the red button on the left first to drop the blue flipper and raise the green flipper. Next, interact with the button on the right to drop the red and green flippers. The memories are now moving as intended, so talk to Joy back by the console about what to do next.

Search the Realm for Mind Worker safety gear

Joy is worried about Sadness and wants you to find her. Before you can go searching, you need to find and equip some Mind Worker safety gear. Head through the tunnel near the back of the room and turn right just before reaching the ramp.

Interact with the colorful wall here to open up a secret storage unit. Inside, you'll find two clothing bags you can then open in your inventory to reveal the Mind Worker safety gear you need. Equip both items.

Use the elevator to head down to Long Term Memory

Walk over to Joy in the middle of the room near the freshly fixed console. Interact with the sparkling spot to activate the hidden elevator and travel down to Long Term Memory so you can start searching for Sadness. As soon as you descend into this uncharted territory, the Emotional Rescue quest ends, and the next one begins.

There's plenty more to explore next, like working on all Retro Roadtrip Star Path duties, collecting some shoreline shellfish, making a Joyful Meal, and tackling all week one routine duties.
