Emotional Phillip Schofield stopped Dancing On Ice rehearsals to address 'elephant in the room' and ask co-stars to 'give him a hug'

Phillip Schofield brought Dancing On Ice rehearsals to a standstill over the weekend, just 48 hours after he announced he was gay.

The This Morning star was supported by co-host and close friend Holly Willoughby behind-the-scenes at the ITV skating show who was left 'tearing up' at his speech.

Phillip, from Oldham, posted a heartfelt statement on Instagram last Friday before being interviewed by Holly on This Morning where he told fans and viewers he is "coming to terms with the fact I am gay".

Then less than two-days later it was back to work for the TV star on Dancing On Ice.

Matt Evers, one of the shows professional skaters, has since revealed what went on before the show went live and how Schofe wanted to address the 'elephant in the room'.

Speaking to Heart, Matt said: "It was a really nice atmosphere in the studio. I think at one point in rehearsals he kind of stopped production and said, 'OK I just need to say this, I don't want to be the elephant in the room anymore, if you want to give me a hug, give me a hug'.

"He was very sensitive to viewers at home as well and he kinda wanted to get that out in dress rehearsal before we were live and it was a really nice moment."

He continued: "Holly teared up and there was about five or six of us that were stood around him at that point and we just all kind of gave him a hug and said, 'do you know what, you're gonna be fine'."

When the show went live on Sunday night, Phil and those watching at home were left overwhelmed when Diversity dancer and DOI judge payed homage to him.

"It's been a big, big week," he said.

"You've always been an absolute legend and never more than this week my friend."

The judges and the audience burst into applause at Ashley's warm words.

TV presenter Phillip, originally from Oldham, laughingly brushed off the tribute, saying "It's not about me", before the action was moved back to the ice rink.

Phil's wife of 27 years, Stephanie Lowe, has also since spoken out about her husband after he said that his decision had caused "many heartbreaking conversations at home" .

She said that she supported his "brave step" and added: "I love Phillip, as much today as I ever have, and always will.

"At the same time, we've been awestruck by the strength and love of our precious girls, even as they've been trying to make sense of it all for themselves.

"Our family has also been so supportive and will help us going forward.
