Emotional nurses cheer as 102 year old coronavirus survivor is wheeled out of hospital to go home

Cheers of joy and rounds of applause rang out in Aintree Hospital as a 102-year-old woman was discharged after beating coronavirus.

The woman, who has not been named, was one of the oldest patients on the wards and defied all the odds to recover from a disease that is particularly dangerous to the elderly.

The video shows the pensioner, who looks well and is sitting up in her bed, being wheeled through the corridors of the Fazakerley hospital as staff wearing protective gowns and masks clap her out.

An internal message to hospital staff said: "Aintree Hospital is celebrating the fantastic news that one of their oldest patients has recovered from coronavirus.

"Everyone on the ward will miss [her], who has been discharged back to her care home, as she had been keeping them all entertained during her stay.

"A 'breath of fresh air', she was more concerned about staff looking after her fellow patients on her ward than herself, and was described as 'always putting others first'.

"It really is brilliant news to hear."

The woman's survival comes as a ray of positivity for Aintree, which has lost two members of staff to the virus.

Staff nurse Liz Glanister, 68, and patient discharge planner Barbara Moore, 54, both died after developing COVID-19 in the past week.

The death toll attributed to the disease edges closer to 1,000 people per day, with 113 deaths so far in Liverpool's hospitals.

Lockdown rules put in place to slow the spread of the virus are expected to be extended further to prevent the number of cases overwhelming the NHS.
