Emotional moment police chief surprises 'superstar' volunteer

This is the emotional moment that the head of Nottinghamshire Police gave a volunteer gardener a full-time job.

David Coleman, from Burton Joyce, has been volunteering for more than two years at police headquarters in Sherwood Lodge.

In that time, he has spruced up the grounds and dog unit, planted flowers, and played a large part in the new memorial garden which honours officers that are no longer here.

Mr Coleman, who has learning difficulties, has handed an award for going above and beyond by chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Craig Guildford.

But what Mr Coleman didn't realise when he was given the award was that Mr Guildford was going to offer him a grounds maintenance job and an apprenticeship with the force.

Mr Guildford said Mr Coleman had been "a superstar" and "gives all his time to us" rather than just a few hours as a volunteer.

He said: "The skills of a good grounds maintenance person and gardener are hard to find and we have looked at you over two years and we should be employing you full time."

Mr Coleman was almost speechless after being given the news.

Mr Guildford told Nottinghamshire Live: "He works his socks off from the minute he turns up on his scooter to the minute he goes home.

"He has been working for us full time as a volunteer so it was the right thing to do and we are taking on apprentices and we found one that suited his need.

"He is a great member of staff and I am really pleased."
