A Liverpool nurse who who nearly died in hospital from coronavirus is now recovering at home after being discharged from hospital.
Elaine Ferrigan, 52, from Orrel Park, spent two weeks being treated at Aintree hospital after testing positive for coronavirus. Doctors later told Mrs Ferrigan's family that she was very poorly and she was admitted to the hospital's critical care unit.
But after responding well to treatment, Mrs Ferrigan was discharged yesterday, and received a guard of honour from staff who applauded her as she left.
A video capturing the moment the mum-of-three leaving the ward shows masked hospital staff clapping and cheering as Mrs Ferrigan walks down the corridor.
Now a spokesman for the Ferrigan family said to the ECHO: "We think mum contracted the virus before the lockdown began. She started off with flu like symptoms, and self-isolated at home.
"But then she started vomiting and her condition deteriorated and she was rushed into Aintree.
"At one stage doctors warned us that mum was very poorly and we were obviously very worried.
"But mum, who has no underlying health conditions, responded well to treatment.
"She was discharged yesterday and was applauded by staff at Aintree.
"Mum did not watch any telly in hospital and has been overwhelmed by the scale of the situation - over 10,000 deaths.
"There has been so much sad news, and we wanted to tell people about mum. She was very poorly but survived.
"We want to urge people to adhere to social distancing to stop the spread of the disease. And we want to thank all the staff at Aintree hospital. "
revealed 11 new fatalities in LiverpoolThe vast majority of those who died were patients at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Liverpool, Aintree and Broadgreen hospitals.
The total across that trust now stands at 158, up from 148 from Saturday.
Two of the deaths recorded were Aintree hospital workers Barbara Moore and Liz Glanister. Tributes described them as an "unsung hero" and a "beautiful soul" respectively.
