Thousands of people were on Thursday arriving at Latitude Festival, one of the first major camping festival events in the world to return since the pandemic.

The four-day music and arts festival at Henham Park, near Southwold in Suffolk, will be at full capacity of 40,000 as a Government test event.

Anyone attending must show proof of a negative lateral flow test or double vaccination, allowing attendees to “jump up and down and hug”.

Once festival-goers are inside, the event will run as normal, with no social distancing, face masks or restrictions, organisers have said.

Headliners include Wolf Alice, The Chemical Brothers, Bastille and Bombay Bicycle Club, with Griff, Mabel, Damon Albarn and Rick Astley also set to perform.

Organiser Melvin Benn said the opening of the doors would be “an emotional moment”, adding that the testing regime would ensure it was a safe event.

“It provides that security and safety that everybody’s looking for,” he said.

The Government’s events research programme was commissioned by the prime minister in February to test how mass gatherings could be held safely.
