Emotional Janey Godley opens up on mum's domestic violence in thanks to charities supporting women

Janey Godley has opened up about the domestic abuse her mum suffered as she praised those fighting violence against women.

The Scots comic who usually leaves us in it stitches revealed a more serious side in a video message supporting the international campaign, 16 Days of Action, which battles domestic violence.

In the recording the 59-year-old revealed 'my mammy had suffered a lot of violence' as she hailed Women's Aid for helping people in similar positions.

It comes as the charity partnered with East Ayrshire Council to tackle the issue.

In a video clip, Janey said: "Hi there this is a video for East Ayrshire Violence Against Women.

"I'm so glad I remembered all those words in the right order.

"I am sending you all my love you know how much people who help women, women who are suffering violence, you know much much that means to me.

"You know my mammy had suffered a lot of violence and anyhow, thank you.

"Thank you for being those people, who look after women who are suffering violence.

"You make me very very proud.

"I'm very proud to be talking to you today so thank you so much, Frank get the door.

"You guys are awesome."

East Ayrshire Council said: "Violence Against Women Partnership 'You guys are awesome!' "Jane Godley sends all her love and praises the work of the Parnership on this first day of 16 Days East Ayrshire."

"Thank you for all of the wonderful work you do to support those in need."

She also retweeted the United Nations in support of ending domestic abuse.

They said: "Violence against women and girls is a global human rights challenge.

"The #COVID19 pandemic has further exposed this issue as a global emergency requiring urgent action."

Police report around 58,000 to 60,000 incidents a year in Scotland with as many as 1 in 3 women experiencing some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime.

The aim of ‘16 Days of Action’ world wide campaign is to eliminate gender violence as it runs from 25 November until 10 December.

Established in 1991, the campaign raises awareness of the reality of domestic violence and pushes for positive change to increase women's safety.
