Emotional call to tell grieving Dumbarton woman she had won £100k jackpot left DJ in bits

A radio host said he was struggling to hold it together after delivering the news to a grieving Dumbarton woman that she had won more than £100,000.

Garry Spence spoke to the Lennox Herald today after the Clyde One Cash Register call which has left most people in the west of Scotland, and beyond, in floods of tears.

Mary Carr scooped the stunning jackpot two months after tragically losing her husband to Covid.

Garry said: “Mary’s call, for me, embodied everything that’s great about the competition.”

The DJ knows “nothing at all” about callers before the phone starts ringing and wasn’t expecting the emotional response when he made the call on Monday night.

Mary answered the phone and was audibly moved immediately.

Garry went on: “You’ve got to be ready for all eventualities.

“I could tell straight away as soon as she mentioned her husband, this was something else altogether.”

The host was conscious to look out for her welfare above everything else as he was waiting on her confirming the £102,000 amount to enable her to win the cash.

Mary responded: “I can’t tell you what this means.”

Garry said: “Because you are dealing with such big sums of money, you go into an autopilot of care mode.

“If my mum took a call to win £100,000 I honestly think she would keel over.”

But he was delighted, despite being emotional, Mary was able to continue the conversation.

Garry went on: “It got everyone, this one.

“I managed to hold it together until the call ended. The people in here were in bits.

“We had phonecalls from people who had to pull over because they were greeting.”

And his social media accounts have been flooded with messages since last night’s exchange with Mary who everyone agrees is a worthy winner.

Garry said: “The amount of people, on social media, who are talking about how well thought of the family are is amazing. They just sound like the nicest people.”
