No Emmy for you!
Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo got another kick in the pants on his way out the door Tuesday when the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences rescinded the Emmy it awarded him for his press briefings during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cuomo, who officially left office Monday night after a sexual harassment scandal permanently altered his three-term legacy, made way Tuesday for successor Gov. Kathy Hochul, who was sworn in just after midnight.
According to the Academy, Cuomo’s resignation — as well as the sexual harassment allegations outlined in a New York state attorney general’s report — sealed the deal for them.
“The International Academy announced today that in light of the New York Attorney General’s report, and Andrew Cuomo’s subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020 International Emmy Award,” academy spokesman Matt Biscuiti said in a statement.
At the height of COVID last year, Cuomo was roundly lauded for his fact-filled and often emotional press briefings — and was awarded an Emmy for his efforts.
But multiple scandals — including the sexual harassment allegations, his administration’s cover-up of nursing home death toll data and a book deal he received a more than $5 million advance for — all led to his ultimate undoing.
“His name and any reference to his receiving the award will be eliminated from International Academy materials going forward,” Biscuiti added.
