The Emmys accidentally showed the wrong photo while trying to pay tribute to late composer André Previn in the ceremony’s in memoriam segment.
As is customary during the ceremony, a video honoured the cultural personalities who have died in the past year.
Singer Halsey performed the tune “Time After Time” while the footage aired.
The in memoriam segment typically consists of a photo of each person, with their name and job title written on top of the image.
When time came to honour Previn, who died on 28 February this year aged 89, a photo of conductor Leonard Slatkin was shown instead of an image of Previn.
Slatkin, who’s still alive, caught the apparent blunder and reacted on Twitter.
“I saw that @theemmys posted a photo of me ‘In Memoriam’ rather than the intended André Previn,” Slatkin wrote.
“André deserved better. I had the opportunity to introduce him when he received the [Kennedy Centre Honours].
“Perhaps he was paying me back for a couple stories I told about him. Andre, RIP.”
Previn received six Emmy nominations throughout his career.
A representative for the Television Academy told The Independent in a statement: “The producers for the 71st Emmy Awards, the Television Academy and FOX sincerely apologise for this error.
“All In Memoriam mentions on the Television Academy’s website feature accurate imagery for Mr. Previn.”
