Emmys 2018 - LIVE: Winners so far include Henry Winkley for sitcom 'Barry' and Amy Sherman-Palladino for 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel'

Stars of the small screen will be lining up tonight to collect awards at the most anticipated television event of the year - the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Comedians Colin Jost and Michael Che, best known for Saturday Night Live's weekly Weekend Update, will host proceedings, marking their first time hosting a major awards ceremony.

That will likely mean plenty of references to President Donald Trump and topical humour is to be expected.

After being ineligible last year, Game of Thrones is expected to once again dominate, the HBO series' seventh season having the most nominations of any show and already having seven statuettes thanks to the Creative Arts Emmys.

Looking to upset the fantasy drama is The Handmaid's Tale, last year's big winner, which could steal a few victories away thanks to its own critically successful second series.

While the Emmys are known for surprises, some actors appear to be shoo-ins for the statuette. Donald Glover is expected to be named best comedy actor for Atlanta the absurdist FX show about life on the margins of the hip-hop community, which he also created. Rachel Brosnahan is expected to take home the best comedy actress award for playing an a 1950s housewife who turns to stand-up after her husband leaves her in Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The most anticipated TV event of the year will begin at 5pm PT. For UK viewers that means 1am BST with an expected finish of 4am BST.

Live Updates

01:44
Winkler and Hader were both excellent in Barry, but I didn't expect that pretty lightweight comedy to be doing so well tonight.
01:43
In fairness, last year's winner Donald Glover wasn't in Atlanta season 2 a huge amount.
01:41
Bill Hader wins for Barry! Wow.
01:41
Presented by Michael Douglas, who I just assumed had probably been accused of something by this point. Congrats on being one of the good guys, Michael!
01:40
Straight on to Lead Actor in a Comedy Series now.
01:39
Brosnahan points out that her show is all about a woman finding her voice, before calling for women to register to vote.
01:38
Happy for Rachel, but significantly less jazzed about hearing the twee TMMM music a thousand times tonight.
01:37
Rachel Brosnahan!
01:37
Lead actress in a Comedy Series!
01:31
Amy Sherman-Palladino it is. 3 for TMMM.
01:30
Sherman-Palladino might well be back on stage for this, unless Hiro Murai can collect Atlanta's first prize of the night?
01:30
Directing for a Comedy Series now.
01:29
Amy Sherman-Palladino wins. Looks like this is going to be The Marvelous Mrs Maisel's night.
01:27
Wow we are tearing through these awards. Next! Um, ah, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy, I think!
01:26
If that voice sounds familiar, it's because Borstein is also the voice of Lois Griffin in Family Guy.
01:26
Alex Borstein wins for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
01:24
Jimmy Kimmel and Tracey Morgan emerge in front of that gargantuan screen to present the Supporting Actress in a Comedy award.
01:23
"If you haven't watched television lately, a comedy is just a drama that's 30 minutes long." Ha!
