Emmy Awards: Succession leads the pack with 10 nominations

The nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards have been announced, with Succession leading the pack with 10 nods.

The dark comedy series, about a dysfunctional wealthy family fighting for power, scored a total of 10 nominations, including Best Drama Series and nods for actors including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin.

The acclaimed limited series Watchmen was also strongly represented, with seven nominations including Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for Regina King. Amazon’s The Marvellous Mrs Maisel was the most nominated comedy series, with eight nominations to its name.

Actors Leslie Jones, Tatiana Maslany, Laverne Cox and Josh Gad were tasked with announcing this year’s nominees, with shows including The Good Place, Ozark, Schitt’s Creek and Mrs America scoring numerous nominations.

The Star Wars series The Mandalorian scored a surprise Best Drama Series nomination, while Reese Witherspoon was left out despite well-reviewed performances in the Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show, and the limited series Little Fires Everywhere.

The Emmys themselves will be held on 20 September, with US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel returning to host the evening’s event.

It remains unclear whether the event will take place in person or virtually over livestream. As it stands, this year’s Emmys will be the second high-profile American awards ceremony to occur since the outbreak of coronavirus. The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards are currently scheduled to take place on 30 August.

In June, it was confirmed in a statement by US broadcaster ABC that Kimmel will host this year’s Emmys regardless of how it takes place, with the network pledging to wait until “the last possible moment” to decide.
