Emmerdale wins National Television Award best soap title for fourth year running

Emmerdale has picked up the top gong at the 2020 National Television Awards - retaining its prestigious title.

The TV show, set in the Yorkshire Dales and filmed partly in Leeds, beat off competition from the likes of Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Eastenders to be named Best Serial Drama.

It is the fourth year running the soap has picked up the award thanks to a stunning array of storylines.

In the past 12 months, the not-so-sleepy Yorkshire village has taken in a almost-deadly boat explosion, and Maya Stepney grooming young Jacob Gallagher.

Robert Sugden also left as the prisoner was transferred to a jail on the Isle of Wight.

First on stage to pick up the prize tonight (January 28) was Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe.

He described the accolade as "unbelievable" and said he was proud of everyone working on the show.
