Emmerdale stops filming after death of crew member as 'mark of respect'

Emmerdale has halted filming as a sign of respect following the death of a crew member.

The ITV soap, which has not named the crew member, released a statement offering their "sincerest and heartfelt condolences to their family and friends".

In a statement to Digital Spy, an Emmerdale spokesperson said: "We can confirm an Emmerdale crew member has very sadly passed away. Our sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of our colleague.

"As a mark of respect, we have stood filming down for today. We'd like to abide by the family's wishes for privacy at this very sad time and we'd ask the media to be respectful of this."

This comes after Emmerdale previously paid tribute to a long-term crew member last year by dedicating an episode to them.

Prior to the episode airing, Sam Dingle actor James Hooton opened up about late props manager Cliff Perry, who worked on the soap for years.

He tweeted at the time: "There’s a dedication at the end of tonight’s @emmerdale for one of our own who has sadly passed away," he tweeted. "#cliffperry was a props man on Emmerdale who started work at YTV [Yorkshire Television] in 1979. He will be sadly missed by all! I for one will be raising a glass. Rip Cliff."

Emmerdale also paid tribute to late Annie Sugden actress Shelia Mercier, who died aged 100 in December 2019.
