“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."

During his tenure at LTC, Chris had built his reputation as a key producer of contemporary drama and modern classics.

He had developed an assistance program for communities with poor access to the arts and partnerships with new artists and companies in the region through the RePlay Festival.

Zoe, who is married to fellow Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley, then said: "This is such sad news.

“I loved working with Chris, some of my happiest times. Such a gentle, skilled director.

"And I have never known a calmer rehearsal room/tech week than his. Rest in peace Chris. Much love."
