Emmerdale star Samantha Giles quits Twitter after trolls hurl ‘vitriolic’ abuse at her

Emmerdale's Samantha Giles has quit Twitter after hitting out at the vile online abuse she has been receiving.

The popular soap star who plays Bernice Blackstock announced she was taking a break from social media due to the impacts of the "vitriolic" abuse she has been subject to of late.

In a tweet earlier today the actress penned: "Having a wee break from the vitriolic place Twitter is today! It astounds me how nasty people are. See you in a while."

It comes after Samantha tweeted to her 57,000 Twitter followers about the lack of people following social distancing guidelines during a family trip out at the weekend.

Sam tweeted: "Today we hit Blackpool for the youngest's upcoming birthday. God it was mental. And no social distancing, not many masks being worn.

"Are people mad???? No wonder cases are rising."

While many people agreed with the 50-year-old star, other responses were abusive.

The star has since been inundated with abusive messages leading to her taking a break from the world of social media.

It comes following recent reports of filming disruptions at the ITV soap due to an "alarming increase" in coronavirus cases.

Current filming schedules are said to be in devastation as a result of the virus and Emmerdale isn't the only show affected with Coronation Street also in havoc.
