Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten recalls her anorexia battle to support Nikki Grahame

Gemma Oaten threw her support behind Nikki Grahame as the Big Brother star's battle with anorexia worsened.

Emmerdale star Gemma joined forces with a number of other celebrities who are rallying behind the former Big Brother contestant.

A GoFundMe page has been set up, with Nikki's permission, to help pay for specialist treatment as her battle with the eating disorder has taken a heartbreaking turn.

Friends say the reality star, who has endured a lifelong battle with anorexia, is in a 'very bad way'.

The donation page has now surpassed its goal of £50,000 as the total now sits at £59,165.

Now Gemma - who was ten when she first showed signs of an eating disorder - has spoken out about Nikki's condition, and urged others who need help to reach out to her charity, Seed.

Appearing visibly upset and shaking, Gemma opened up about her own charity fighting eating disorder and helping sufferers, which started after she fell victim to anorexia herself.

"I am struggling with this because 26 years ago the reason Seed was co-founded by my parents was because we went through the exact same thing," she told fans.

"And yet here we are now, still fighting for somebody's life. This beautiful beautiful woman that deserves a life away from an eating disorder can't get help, and it's not just Nikki, it's hundreds of thousands of people."

The soap star urged those who are struggling to reach out and get help as she blasted the government for waiting too long to inject money into mental health awareness and support.

In a follow-up tweet, Gemma added: "I am angry too and I apologise, but when will the powers that be step up and prioritise the help needed to support those with Eating Disorders?! We see this constantly and it's NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Maybe if the volunteer sector were supported more we could do more...

"Early intervention is KEY. You can't put a number on a life. Not on the scales, not on money and not on time. These are real people with loved ones who feel helpless. A daughter, son, brother, sister, wife, husband, friend. I will keep fighting for change..."

Close friends of Nikki - who shot to fame on the 2006 series of the Channel 4 show - say they are raising money as a last hope to afford a costly rehabilitation centre as 'all other options have been exhausted'.

The Go Fund Me Page featured a statement by Nikki's friends explaining their fundraising efforts.

"We have set up this page for our very close and dear friend Nikki. As some of you may know, Nikki is battling Anorexia. She has been battling for most of her life and as you can see, Nikki is now in a very bad way so we need to do something quickly.

"Over the past years Nikki's family and friends have tried so desperately to get Nikki all the help possible through the NHS but unfortunately the treatments have failed and we have exhausted every avenue possible, and now Nik is unfortunately in a very bad way, this is now our last hope.

"This is why we feel that getting her treatment in a specialist clinic is the only option left for her. We are praying this gives her the chance of kicking this illness to the curb once and for all."

They went on to say that Nikki is facing a heartbreaking daily struggle with the eating disorder.

"We desperately just want a healthy and well Nikki back with us. She has no energy and is taking each day as it comes," they revealed.

"Mental health, as so many of you know, is debilitating in many ways. We want to help save our friend from letting this Illness beat her. If you are able to donate anything then we would be extremely grateful."
