Emmerdale sparks Ofcom complaints over Paul's brutal attack on Vinny before watershed

Emmerdale viewers have been complaining to Ofcom over scenes that aired on the ITV soap last week.

During last Thursday's episode, things became vicious as Paul (Reece Dinsdale) attacked his poor son Vinny (Bradley Johnson) while they were supposed to be celebrating his stag do ahead of his wedding to Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley).

In pretty harsh scenes, Paul punched his son to the floor and proceeded to kick him several times - but he clearly went too far.

The hideous character was seen panicking as Vinny lay lifeless on the gravel.

As he urged his son to wake up, Paul told him he was sorry and was about to walk away when Vinny started coughing and came to.

Ofcom has received 66 complaints from Emmerdale viewers regarding a scene between Paul and Vinny (ITV)

The violent scene occurred before the 9pm watershed, and Ofcom have confirmed they received 66 complaints in total.

Judging by the response from viewers on Twitter, it's hardly surprising that they decided to take it one step further.

One person tweeted: "Why has Emmerdale gone like this? Never used to be so nasty. Why do soaps feel they need to air these storylines?"

Poor Vinny was beaten up so badly by his dad Paul that he ended up in hospital (ITV)

Another even argued the show is trying to “promote” violence, and posted: "Them in charge seem to promote violence #emmerdale."

And a third viewer penned: "I actually found the attack scene really distressing to watch and I hope @emmerdale are ending this storyline soon."

*Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
