Emmerdale's tear-jerking death leaves the Dingles devastated before Christmas

Emmerdale fans saw the Dingles grieving in sad scenes on Thursday night, as their beloved and final pig passed away.

Vet Rhona Goskirk checked the animal over after Sam and Lydia Dingle revealed she had not been doing so well.

But Rhona soon broke the upsetting news to them that there was nothing they could do for her, and her condition was linked to her heart.

As Sam began listing ways of helping her, reluctant to let her go, Rhona confirmed that nothing would work, and the best thing for her would be to put her to sleep.

His wife Lydia and sister Belle were teary as they realised they had to say goodbye to the pig, a beloved member of the family.

Sam initially refused to believe the news, but realised the time had come to let her go.

He agreed to be with her when the time came, with Belle deciding to go with him - and they stayed with their beloved pig as she died.

Lydia was seen sobbing as she waited inside as it happened, while later she decided to give the animal a burial.

It was while she was cleaning up the pen outside that she came across two big surprises, including an expected new arrival.

She found an old locket of Belle's in the pig's poo that she had lost ages ago, and it contained a photo of her late mother Lisa, and her father Zak.

Also found was a tiny baby chick hiding at the back, with the family also having chickens on the farm.

The new arrival left them with some joy, as they decided to keep it and said it was a sign from Lisa telling them to "crack on" with life.

Sam and the others sweetly shared their fondest memories of their lost pig, and all of the pigs they have had on their farm over the years - as they said a final goodbye.

It comes ahead of another new arrival on Christmas Day, when Cain Dingle's secret brother Caleb makes his debut - 30 years after they last saw each other.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
