Emmerdale's Robert Sugden drops upsetting news on Victoria as future return teased

Emmerdale's Robert Sugden made a big decision on Tuesday night, after speculation he could return to the village.

Victoria Sugden was hopeful that her brother might get a reduced sentence in prison, after new evidence came to light that was linked to his crime.

Robert is serving a 14-year sentence for the murder of Lee Posner, with him still having 12 years to go.

He had hit Lee over the head with a shovel, causing a brain bleed with the character later dying from his injuries.

But Lee's brother Luke recently confessed he had a fight with him on the same day, where Lee hit his head.

The fact he'd hit his head before the attack left Victoria wondering if he'd already sustained the injuries, and whether Robert was solely responsible for the death.

She told Robert the news in the hope he would appeal his sentence and maybe get some time off of it.

But in Tuesday's episode of the ITV soap, Robert called his sister to deliver the news she was not hoping for.

He decided he was not going to appeal against his prison sentence, after pleading guilty in 2019.

He'd been told that an appeal would likely cost a fortune with it unlikely it would change much.

Victoria told Robert's ex-husband Aaron Dingle that he'd decided to keep his head down and serve his time instead.

He did not believe it would take more than a few months off the time he had left to serve, and had been told that no court would overturn his murder conviction.

But Aaron gave Victoria, and possibly even fans, some hopes about the future and a later return.

She had said to him: "I wanted him back so badly. He's not even met his nephew."

He told her: "But he will, and you will get him back. Until you do, you have still got me."

So when the time does come for Robert to be released, will he head back to the village?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
