Emmerdale's Matthew Wolfenden seen for first time since wife Charley quit ITV soap

Matthew Wolfenden has been seen in public for the first time since his wife Charley Webb was reported to have quit Emmerdale.

The actor, who plays David Metcalfe, is said to have been involved in a 'race probe' following a complaint an inappropriate comment was made to a mixed-race actress.

Seen at a petrol station filling up his car in Yorkshire, Matthew, 41, was seen out and about for the first time since the accusations swirled wearing a navy hoody, cap and jeans.

It comes after it was reported that his wife Charley, 33, who plays Debbie Dingle on the ITV soap, was quitting Emmerdale after 19 years.

The actress who has three children with Matthew is said to have stepped back from the show after the rumours involving her husband.

It was first claimed at the beginning of November that Matthew and co-star Isabel Hodgins - who play on-screen couple David Metcalfe and Victoria Sugden - clashed while filming alongside Aaron Anthony.

Matthew and Isabel faced claims that a female mixed-race actress' accent was mimicked, The Sun had reported at the time.

It was also claimed that Matthew argued with Aaron, who plays Ellis Chapman, following the incident.

Aaron is said to be 'bitterly angry' about the situation and has apparently filmed his last scenes for the soap.

A source told The Sun: "He has done some filming over the last couple of weeks, but the understanding is that those scenes will be his last."

They also revealed Matthew and Isabel were "not filming at the moment following a complaint."

Matthew's character, David Metcalfe, and Isabel's Victoria Barton were written out of the show as the allegations were investigated.

It has not been confirmed whether Matthew will return to filming after he his character was nearly being killed in the rapids during dramatic scenes in October.

It has been suggested that wife Charley is "closing the door' on the ITV soap for good" following the claims, which have shocked Emmerdale fans.

The Mirror has contacted Emmerdale's reps for comment.
