Emmerdale's Lawrence Robb says viewer backlash over love cheat Mackenzie can be 'hard'

Emmerdale star Lawrence Robb has addressed viewers' reactions to his latest storyline, with his character Mackenzie Boyd up to no good.

Mackenzie cheated on his partner Charity Dingle last summer with teen Chloe Harris, who is now pregnant with his baby.

While he's come close to telling the truth a handful of times, he's instead made matters worse by pretending nothing happened and even proposing to Charity.

Recently, fans have seen Chloe move in with the couple after her collapse and Mackenzie came up with all kinds of excuses as to why it wouldn't work.

In the end it left his romance on the rocks, but he has continued to hide his secret - something fans have shared their thoughts on online.

But speaking to The Mirror and other press recently, actor Lawrence confessed that while the viewer critique comes with the job, it can sometimes be "hard" to deal with.

Lawrence explained that sometimes viewers got "personal" with their comments, with him suggesting people don't always separate the cast member from their character.

He explained: "[The viewers have had] lots, lots to say. I mean Mackenzie is a good character to play. I enjoy playing him.

"I very often do not condone his actions as Lawrence, but we're actors given a script. I certainly wouldn't go about doing the things that Mack would, but that's the drama of it.

"I think sometimes viewers confuse the actor with the character and then they can start going down the personal route, which as an actor it's part and parcel of the job, but some of it can be quite hard I guess sometimes.

"But we have to take the rough with the smooth and I know what I'm doing as a character is good work, because it's creating these reactions with viewers so I guess that's a good thing."

Lawrence also teased Mack and Charity's big wedding set to air this year, and it's thought the baby secret could finally be rumbled.

He said: "It will be as dramatic as I imagine everyone is envisioning it to be, with all the plot twists involved. I'm excited."

Lawrence also revealed whether he thought there was a future for Mack and Charity once she learns what happened with Chloe.

He said: "Emma [Atkins] is great to work with. I think every ship has its course and if it's meant to end, then it's meant to end.

"When Charity finds out, in my honest opinion I'm not sure. Knowing what Charity is like as a character I'd like to think she can forgive Mack, but she's proper fiery so I don't know.

"I wouldn't want it to be detrimental to Emma's character just for the sake of keeping us together so if it comes to an end, it comes to an end."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
