Emmerdale's Kyle Winchester surname explained as fans point out issue with boy's Al Chapman murder confession

Emmerdale fans pointed out a problem with little Kyle Winchester's version of events as the boy finally broke down and confessed to police that he - and not Cain - was responsible for the murder of Al Chapman.

Kyle ended up being interviewed by the police on Friday night's episode as mum Amy Wyatt watched on.

But there were a couple of things that stumped Emmerdale fans, including why Kyle's surname is Winchester and the version of events surrounding Al's murder that Kyle told police.

"Can I speak to a policeman?" Kyle asked an officer at the police station.

When asked why, he said: "I killed someone, and I can prove it" before handing a carrier bag holding a bloody jumper to the police.

The police then interviewed Kyle, who gave his surname as Winchester, recording what he said in front of mum Amy Wyatt.

Kyle told the police officer interviewing him: "I killed Al Chapman."

He then told the police how he picked up a shotgun while Al was having an argument and, after being told to put the gun down, Kyle recounted how he stepped back, tried to get away but was still holding the gun.

"I don't know what happened. I didn't mean to... to make it shoot. But there was this bang and he fell and I got blood on my jumper."

Several viewers didn't understand why Kyle's surname is Winchester and not Wyatt or Dingle.

The reason for that is: Kyle is the son of Cain Dingle and Amy Wyatt who was adopted by Tom and Karen Winchester.

Following their deaths in 2013, Kyle was raised by Karen's mum Joanie until she died in 2017, which is why he retains his adoptive parents' Winchester surname.

But many viewers pointed out issues with Kyle's confession, namely, that there's no way Kyle could have fired a shotgun - accidentally or otherwise- without the kickback throwing his aim off.

That's because, as anyone who plays violent shooter games knows, shotguns have a huge kick when fired and a small boy would probably be knocked over when trying to fire one.

@davidmackayy said: "How on earth could Kyle even use a shotgun without being thrown on his back #emmerdale"

@spartacus2693 said: "Kyle omitted the biggest part of events - Al came towards him and Kyle tripped, falling backwards and causing the trigger to be pulled = accident! #emmerdale"

At the end of the action, we found out that Kyle has been arrested by police and bailed pending investigation into his version of events - and to test the blood on his jumper.
