Emmerdale's Bear Wolf asks for Paddy's help to read love letters he's already replied to

Bear Wolf reconnected with his son Paddy in tonight's Emmerdale after the vet discovered his dad is illiterate.

The pair bonded when Paddy made a generous offer to help teach Bear how to read, in particular the love letters that Paddy's mum had been writing to her secret boyfriend for years.

But there was some concern over the storyline that Bear couldn't read as he had been replying to Paddy's mum with his own lengthy letters during their affair.

After agreeing to help Bear understand what one of the letters said, Paddy had to do some quick-thinking as his mum had been trying to explain that she hadn't loved him as he'd thought.

Paddy agreed to help his dad Bear read the love letters (ITV)

Speaking after the reading session a glum Paddy said: "She loved me dad, it’s Bear she didn’t love.

"I was trying to protect him from the truth."

Viewers watching took to Twitter to praise the storyline, with one saying: "The conversation about Bear’s illiteracy is actually important many people struggle with it and it should not be shameful!"

"I actually think the Paddy and Bear stuff is quite nice when they play it seriously. I don't get the comedy stuff, but it's touching imo to see Paddy sparing his dad's feelings," added another.

But some fans have questioned the plot hole (ITV)

Bear was first introduced to the soap with the discovery that he was Paddy's real dad.

But fans have repeatedly questioned the plot hole, asking how he could have continued the affair and replying to the love letters if he couldn't read.

"How did Bear write those letters/poems to paddy’s mum if he can’t read?" asked one a few days ago.

The Sun reported that another fan had asked: "I may be going mad but I'm sure we have seen him reading and didn't the affair with Paddy's mum get discovered as they wrote each other long love letters so how would he know what to say if he couldn't read what she had written?"

*Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV at 7pm with an extra episode on Thursdays at 8pm
