Emmerdale heartbreak as Diane Sugden confirms devastating death news to Victoria

Emmerdale aired the announcement of Annie Sugden's death on Friday night in moving scenes.

Victoria Sugden learned the heartbreaking news her grandmother had passed away.

Annie, played by actress Sheila Mercier, last appeared on the soap in 2009 following the death of her son Jack Sugden.

Emmerdale legend Sheila passed away in December 2019 aged 100.

The ITV soap paid tribute to the icon, and dedicated an episode to her after the sad news.

In moving scenes on Friday night, Victoria was contacted by stepmother Diane Sugden who shared the news.

With Diane off screen, she rang Vic and asked her where she was.

It appears she asked for her to go home or somewhere private, so that she could break the news to her.

Victoria was worried though, sensing something was wrong.

Admitting her panic, she begged Diane to tell her then and there over the phone.

It's then that she conformed the news, with Victoria choking up and planning to go and see Diane.

She was in the shop at the time with Marlon Dingle, who was worried about her.

Victoria then told him: "My gran's died. It's Annie, she's dead."

As the scene came to an end, viewers shared their emotional reactions to the news and bid Annie, and Sheila, farewell.

Emmerdale airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7pm on ITV.
