Paige, who left the soap around a year ago, played one of Emmerdale's most wicked villains and while some were pleased to see Meena thrown behind bars, others are hopeful she will return.

Paige said: "I am so incredibly humbled and honoured to be announcing #Lioness. To say this part, this story, this cast and crew is a dream come true would be doing it a disservice - I am so blown away by this incredible story and cannot wait for the world to learn about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh.

"Youngest daughter of the deposed Maharajah Duleep Singh and goddaughter to Queen Victoria, her life, the people she helped and her work as a suffragette is truly amazing. And I am SO delighted to be working with the amazing @aditiraohydari and @kajribabbar Oh go on, I am going to say it! It is a dream come true!"

Fans and celebrity friends alike rushed to the comments section to wish Paige well. Emmerdale's Manpreet Sharma star Rebecca Sarker said: "Yes, sis", while Ash Palmisciano who plays Matty Barton said: "Amazing. Congratulations lovely can’t wait to see it! you will be fantastic and what a world away from Meena hey ha well done mate xx"

Carry said: "Congratulations", while Emily said: "That's amazing". Isla said: "I'm so happy for you, I can't wait to see you on TV again. I am so happy".
