Emmerdale fans were stunned tonight as schoolteacher Maya abandoned Jacob and the hotel room they'd been hiding out in.
Earlier in the episode Maya said to her student: "They will never accept us, Jacob, you can't have it all, if you want me you have to leave everything else behind."
Jacob brought Maya flowers and told her she was beautiful, saying: "You're the only thing that matters to me, I don't want to argue with you."
Maya told him : "We just need to get through these next bumpy few weeks and we will find a place we can be together."
As Eric returned from hospital David told him that Jacob had run off with Maya, saying he had no idea it had been going on.
Eric was stunned and wanted David to call the police, but David protested, saying that Jacob was going to meet him.

David went to the place he'd arranged to meet Jacob and was sad as he failed to turn up.
And Jacob was stunned as he returned to the hotel room he'd been sharing with his teacher lover to find it empty.
As he shouted for Maya, fans were impressed with the twist and took to twitter in their droves.

One said: "Ha ...what a twist, Maya the one who's done the runner - didn't see that coming"
Another said: "Maya actually left without Jacob. Seriously?"
And a third said: "Typical Maya - doing another runner. For all her mind games and manipulative ways, she’s nothing but a coward. The sooner she’s caught the better."
