Emmerdale fans heartbroken as well-loved character dies off-screen

Emmerdale viewers were heartbroken to learn a well-loved character had died off-screen.

Earlier in the week, Marlon and Bob had been trying to match up Victoria with Luke, knowing they are made for one another.

But their timing was completely off, as Victoria got news that Annie Sugden had died.

Annie's off screen death comes after the actress Sheila Mercier died aged 100 in December.

Sheila died peacefully in her sleep according to former Yorkshire Television co-star Frederick Pyne, who played Matt Skilbeck in Emmerdale Farm from its launch in 1972 until 1989.

Before starring in the ITV soap Sheila had a long career on the stage - touring with a Shakespeare company.

During the Second World War she joined the WAAF division of the Royal Air Force, serving in fighter command, eventually becoming adjutant.

After the war, she worked in repertory theatre until 1951.

In 1972, she was cast in the role she is best known for, the matriarch Annie Sugden, one of the principal characters in the new British soap opera Emmerdale Farm.

She was last seen in Emmerdale in 2009, where Annie attended the funeral of Jack Sugden.

She was widowed when her husband, actor Peter Mercier, died in 1993, after 42 years of marriage.

Fans were devastated by the scenes that aired tonight with many taking to Twitter.

Chris said: "Bye bye officially Annie Sugden", followed by crying emojis.

Lewis wrote: "Annie Sugden dying is the real end of an era."

And Matthew said: "Sad News - RIP Annie Sugden."
