Emmerdale fans confused as Arthur returns to soap looking very different

Emmerdale fans were left gobsmacked after Arthur Thomas returned to the show looking very different.

But, unlike many soap characters who leave as one actor and come back as another ( cough cough Ben Mitchell from EastEnders ), it is still the same actor playing him - and his character has just been off-screen for a few months.

Actor Alfie Clarke has grown several inches since he was last on screen a few months ago.

The 13-year-old has played Arthur, son of Laurel and the late Reverend Ashley Thomas, since 2009 and to many viewers has stayed the same small boy - until now.

Fans took to Twitter to share their surprise at how much the teen had shot up.

Some even questioned if he was being played by the same actor as he looked so different.

One wrote: “Holy Moly is that Arthur? He’s grown!”

Other similar comments included “Larl Arthur is 6ft 5 he’s grew a bit”; “Has Arthur been on the spinach?” and “I feel like Arthur's aged about 5 years still think he is like 10.”

Arthur has been involved in some big storylines during his time on the soap, most recently as part of a hard-hitting bullying storyline.

One viewer quipped: “Arthur’s been bulking up for his next rounds of torture for poor Archie.”

The storyline showed how Arthur was unable to process the grief he felt for his dead dad so started picking on Archie, son of Jai Sharma and Rachel Breckle.

Jai was his mum’s new partner, with the couple getting together after Ashley’s 2018 death from early onset dementia.

The most harrowing scenes were aired in December 2019, and saw the younger boy run away from home to escape the abuse.

Arthur threatened the younger boy in to keeping quiet, and did all he could to undermine his achievements and stop him from making friends.

Ahead of the village panto, Arthur sneered at Archie: "Who would want to go and watch something with you in it. Unless you’re a frog or something. He’d be a good frog."

When Archie claimed his dad wanted him around, Arthur replied: "He’s lying. He only brought you here because he doesn’t know what else to do with you. He knows we all hate you. Even he hates you. Everyone hates you, Archie."
