Emmerdale confirms death as long lost character makes shock return

Emmerdale is bringing back a long lost character next week, but confirms the death of another at the same time.

In upcoming scenes Jai (Chris Bisson) is shocked when Dan (Liam Fox) turns up with his estranged son Archie (Kai Assi).

Dan drops the bombshell that Archie's mum Rachel, played by ex Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten, has died.

While fans won't see Rachel's death onscreen, it comes as a huge shock to Jai, who tries to engage with his distant son.

But he struggles to get through to him as they barely know each other since Rachel moved away from the village.

Gemma played Rachel Breckle from July 2011 and January 2014 but returned for another stint in 2015.

In her last storyline Rachel became physically abusive towards her partner Sam Dingle (James Hooton).

She decided leave the village to get help and took Archie and her sister Ali with her.

It's currently unclear how Rachel died and whether fans will find out what happened to her.

Gemma had previously said she'd like to return to the soap.

She said in 2016: "It is such a treat of a job. So I don't think you can ever put limitations on going back."

Aside from Emmerdale, Gemma has made several guest appearances on Holby City as Nurse Sydney Summers.

In 2017 she appeared in Rise Of The Footsoldier 3 and had a small role in Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
