Emmerdale cast cry 'real tears' in moving funeral episode which features a show first

The Emmerdale cast shed "real tears" during filming for the funeral of two of the soap's most loved characters.

Producer Laura Shaw confirmed a show first featured in the highly emotional scenes, as she explained the decision to have two characters' farewells at the same time.

The village residents will gather to say a heartbreaking goodbye to Faith Dingle and Liv Flaherty on Friday night.

In emotional scenes, their coffins will make their way through the village for their joint service following their recent deaths on the ITV soap.

Faith passed away in harrowing scenes earlier this month, when she took her own life amid her devastating cancer battle - and she died in son Cain Dingle's arms.

Liv was crushed by a caravan during the horrifying storm, and she suffered fatal injuries and died in her husband Vinny Dingle's arms.

The Dingles are suffering with their grief, but on Friday night the village rallies together to show they are there for them.

Faith and Liv's loved ones and closest pals line the village, either side of the main pathway, to watch as their coffins are carried through.

Both caskets are held in separate horse drawn carriages, surrounded by flowers, with some of their closest loved ones walking behind them.

Other residents, and the entire adult cast, are shown lining the route, with white roses placed on the floor below as Faith and Liv make their final journey.

Walking the route with Liv is her husband Vinny, his mum Mandy Dingle and Liv's brother Aaron Dingle.

Behind them and behind Faith is her children Cain and Chas Dingle, alongside Cain's wife Moira Dingle, and his son Kyle.

Images reveal the heartbreaking moments ahead of the tear-jerking episode's transmission, while there is also a preview of the service.

Just days before Liv died she was in tears over the loss of Faith, with the pair being close, so to say goodbye to both of them at the same time will no doubt be a difficult and devastating time for the family.

Producer Laura discussed the double funeral and the fact a show first was organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary, and give Faith and Liv a loving send-off.

For the first time ever, the entire adult cast feature in the same scene as the coffins are carried through the village - and Laura revealed there were "real tears" amongst the cast.

She spilled: "We knew when we decided to do a joint funeral for Faith and Liv that it would need to be a very special and memorable funeral for two such hugely epic and much loved characters.

"Having a scene featuring the entire adult cast was not something we had done before and given the funeral was taking place towards the end of our October 50th birthday month, it felt very right and fitting that we had the whole cast there to say goodbye.

"It was no easy feat for the Emmerdale production team to organise and execute and nor was it easy to shoot as the Dingles said farewell to not one but two of their beloved family, some of the tears that fell that day were absolutely real.

"But behind the tears and sadness there was also a celebratory feel on set. A feeling of pride and honour that the October month was ending with all our villagers united on Main Street, demonstrating that love and warmth and togetherness that has kept Emmerdale on our screens for 50 years."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
