Emmerdale back on set as 6 'tense' lockdown episodes are filmed for June

Emmerdale's cast and crew are back on set and will be filming six "tense" lockdown episodes.

This comes eight weeks after the ITV soap was forced to pause filming.

Everyone on the set of Emmerdale will be adhering to social distancing measures and are doing their own make-up and sorting out their own clothes.

The episodes will run from June and will run straight after the filmed episodes run out.

They will also focus on the relationships in various households amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Appearing on This Morning today, Sharon Marshall announced the news to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

She revealed that the filmed episodes would include: Cain and Aaron (Jeff Hordley and Danny Miller), Chas and Paddy (Lucy Pargeter and Dominic Brunt), Sam and Lydia (James Hooton and Karen Blick), Marlon, Al and Ellis (Mark Charnock, Michael Wildman, Aaron Anthony), Mandy and Vinny (Lisa Riley and Bradley Johnson) and Jimmy and Nicola (Nick Miles and Nicola Wheeler).

Measures to ensure the safety for everyone on set will also include crew using their own sanitised equipment, office staff working from home and a ban on location filming.

The crew also attended a meeting with the company’s medical adviser and participated in a health and safety induction which saw the new working environment procedures explained in detail.

Emmerdale boss Jane Hudson announced in a pre-filmed clip on set: "We're back on set today, back with Emmerdale shooting our very special lockdown epsiodes.

"We're currently on set with Cain and Aaron, working on our scenes, social distancing on and off set, which isn't easy but we're getting used to it and I think everybody's glad to be back."

Sharon said that it was "buzzing" on set as everyone was "excited to be back".

Offering more of an insight as to what viewers could expect from the episodes, she explained: "They're called the lockdown episodes and they are what we refer to as two-hander episodes, paired down.

"So it's two cast members, very paired down."

Sharing a clip from the sparse set, Sharon revealed that some scenes had been filmed on an iPhone.

Revealing that filming had commenced yesterday, Sharon said that all the actors taking part would be two meters away from each other at all times.

As cast would be dealing with their own wardrobe, Sharon said that they could bring clothes from home if they fit their character's style.

The pandemic will feature in the lockdown episodes, with the characters reflecting on the nation's gratitude to the NHS and clapping for carers.

ITV's Managing Director of Continuing Drama John Whiston said: “It's brilliant that Jane and the team at Emmerdale have risen to the challenge of getting these episodes shot using the new protocols for filming drama while observing the Government's social distancing guidelines.

"Also, it will be great to see what the likes of Chas and Paddy and Jimmy and Nicola have got up to while they've been going through lockdown the same as the rest of us!”
