Emmerdale actor accidentally got drunk on set as soap uses real alcohol in pub scenes

Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden confessed he ended up getting tipsy, filming some of his first scenes for the ITV soap.

David Metcalfe made his village debut in 2006, and has been at the centre of some big scenes ever since.

But in his early days, actor Matthew didn't get the memo about the scenes in The Woolpack - and the fact the cast used real alcohol.

In one scene, David was meant to down pints of beer as other things went on in the pub.

It's usual to film multiple takes, especially if a blunder or slip-up occurs during filming.

But surprisingly the cast confessed, during a special episode looking back at the best Emmerdale slip-ups, that the cast drink real booze on the set for filming.

Matthew didn't know this as he had only recently joined, leading to him downing a number of beers for one scene back in the day.

By the time the scene had been completely finished, actor Matthew confessed he was no longer sobre.

Speaking on the show on Tuesday night, he revealed: "I was on my second day of the job when I was filming in The Woolpack.

"I didn't know this fact. I had a stage direction that David downs his pint and storms out.

"He'd had an argument with Eric, and I kept doing this and this, and I was sober at the beginning and by the end..."

He then mimicked how he was slurring his speech after all the booze.

Other stars on the show echoed this, with them too having a little too much to drink during filming.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode on Thursdays at 8pm.
