Former France World Cup-winner Emmanuel Petit has questioned what happened between Everton manager Rafa Benitez and Lucas Digne which forced the left-back to leave the club.
Digne had cemented himself as one of the standout full-backs in the Premier League prior to Benitez's arrival at Everton.
But over the course of this season, the duo had a falling out which left the French defender out of the squad and seeking an exit from the club.
Digne eventually was sold to Aston Villa on Thursday, managed by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and Petit has been left confused by how things unfolded.
“What was the problem between Rafael Benitez and Lucas Digne?" Petit asked Gambling.com .
"He was one of the best left-backs in the Premier League last season. I just don't get it!
“When I watch Everton, I am very frustrated because I had high hopes for this team at the beginning of the season.
“But, they really don't have the depth on the bench and when three or four players are out for them, all of a sudden they are average.
"On top of that, you have some of the best players struggling with the manager.”
Everton will play Norwich City this afternoon looking to put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone, with the club currently eight points off 17th place.
The game kicks off at 3pm today.
