Emmanuel Petit and Bacary Sagna tear Arsenal to shreds as Chelsea run riot at Emirates

Former Arsenal pair Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Petit have laid into the Gunners after their defeat to Chelsea at the Emirates.

The Blues eased to victory in north London with Romelu Lukaku and Reece James both scoring.

It means the Gunners have lost their opening two Premier League games with Petit claiming he no longer feels anything watching his former employers.

Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale were both signed on Friday, but any optimism created by their arrivals has quickly disintegrated.

Ben White, Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares have also arrived in north London.

Petit laid into the club's recruitment, which doesn't appear to have made a difference at this early stage.

He told RMC: "Watching Arsenal now, I feel nothing, it does nothing for me, I have become completely desensitised. What is the plan? We have spent close to the most in the Premier League this summer. I don’t understand it.”

Arsenal are one of the league's highest spending teams but much of their investment has been made with a long-term vision in mind.

The eldest of their five new signings is 23.

Mikel Arteta's shining lights at Arsenal are often his younger players - be it Emile Smith Rowe or Bukayo Saka.

But Sagna has raised concerns over the lack of senior pros in the dressing room who have experienced success previously.

He said: “Maybe we have players with character, but they have won nothing. Today, you know how youngsters are, some older player tells them what to do.

"They say: “Well what have you won?” A player who has won titles barely has to speak to be listened to.

“How can you spend €150m and only bring in young players? It might be good for the future, but someone has got to think about the present.

"When I was playing, anyone would be excited to join Arsenal, now… we have lost our DNA.”

The Gunners finished eighth last term, their worst showing in more than two decades.

Arteta's next assignment will be back at his former home - the Etihad - as he takes Arsenal to face champions Manchester City.

Arsenal are without Ben White and Alexandre Lacazette, who both have Covid, whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has only just recovered from the virus.

It has left the Gunners boss with major issues around selection as criticism continues to come his way.

Defeat against Chelsea was his 20th league reverse in his 60 games in charge.
