Emma Watson speaks out on JK Rowling's 'anti-trans' tweet and takes swipe at author

Emma Watson has followed Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in speaking out after author JK Rowling's 'anti-trans' tweet.

The 30-year-old actress has broken her silence about the comment that Rowling made and has come out in support of the transgender community.

While the 54-year-old Harry Potter creator has denied that her tweet was taking aim at those who have transitioned, there has been much condemnation about the perceived nature of her tweet.

Emma, who played Hermione Grainger in the Potter franchise, is the latest to have her say and back those who are transgender.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Emma added to the furore: "Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are."

She added: “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are."

Emma revealed that she would be donating to the charities Mama Cash and Mermaids, before ending her message with: “Happy #PRIDE2020 Sending love x.”

JK was accused of transphobia after she replied to an opinion piece on Devex, which argued that periods aren't exclusive to women and that transgender men can also menstruate.

The author controversially wrote: "‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?"

It was roundly believed that JK was implying "women" at the end of her tweet.

JK compounded the issue in a series of tweets, in which she wrote: "If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.

"I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth."

She then went on to defend her reply and insist that she was not transphobic.

JK wrote: "The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women - ie, to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences - is a nonsense."
