I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie is reportedly in early talks to direct Cruella, Disney’s live-action 101 Dalmations spin-off starring Emma Stone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be an original story with a new period edge, set “in the early 1980s with a punk vibe”.

De Vil first appeared in 1961 animation 101 Dalmatians, then was famously brought to life by Glenn Close as the head of a fashion house in the John Hughes written live-action movie of the same name in 1996.

Mozart in the Jungle co-creator Alex Timbers was originally lined up to direct Cruella, but encountered scheduling issues.

Gillespie’s most recent film was I, Tonya, which earned Margot Robbie an Oscar nomination and was also set in the 1980s.

Jez Butterworth has written the script for Cruella which, according to Deadline, will start pre-production immediately with filming beginning next year.
