Emma Raducanu wins Sports Personality of the Year after legendary US Open win

British teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has rounded off an amazing year by winning BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the the first woman to top the vote in 15 years.

Emma, 19, had many people across the country and all over the world on the edges of their seats as she competed in the women's final of the US Open against Canada's Leylah Fernandez in September.

In a match that had everything, Emma took the first set 6-4, before Fernandez took control in the second and looked set to take things to a third set, particularly when Emma went down after skidding on the court.

However, after receiving medical treatment she held her nerve and clinched the second set and the title 6-3.

Emma was the the first British woman in 53 years to reach a Grand Slam final, and her US Open win has cleared stayed at the forefront of many BBC viewers' minds as she topped the annual poll on Sunday night.

Bookies favourite Emma, who appeared at Sunday night's event virtually from self-isolation, saw off some stiff competition from the likes of Olympic diving champion Tom Daley, boxer Tyson Fury, England star Raheem Sterling and Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty to triumph in the public vote, with Tom in second and Adam in third.

As well as thanking her coaches, family and friends, Emma said she was "really honoured" to win the award and "really humbled" to join the illustrious list of SPOTY champions.

She follows in the footsteps of the likes of previous Sports Personality of the Year winners Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Holmes, Mo Farah, Chris Hoy and Zara Tindall, the last female athlete to win 15 years ago.
