Emma Raducanu vs Coco Gauff LIVE: Italian Open result as Gauff races to dominant win in last-16

Coco Gauff ended Emma Raducanu’s run at the Italian Open as the World No 3 reached the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-1 6-2 victory in Rome.

Raducanu and Gauff were meeting for just the second time and although the British player is a year older at 22, it’s the American who has more experience on clay.

And Gauff’s greater pedigree was clear in the battle of former US Open champions as she displayed her impressive court-coverage and aggressive shot-making on the surface, racing into the lead.

Raducanu did not play poorly but, after a close start to the second set, Gauff won the final five games in a row to book her place in the quarter-finals, needing just 79 minutes to seal victory.

Elsewhere at the Italian Open, home favourite Jannik Sinner continued his comeback from a three-month doping suspension by beating Jesper de Jong 6-4 6-2. It sets up a Rome rematch with Francisco Cerundolo, who beat Sinner at the Italian Open in 2023, and which promises to be a much sterner test for the returning World No 1.

Emma Raducanu admits she was 'outplayed' by Coco Gauff

17:37 , Jamie Braidwood

"I found it a really difficult match,” Raducanu tells Sky Sports. “I think the conditions were very different to my last round, it was different court and it was very bouncy, there wasn't much clay on the court. And it was quite windy too.

“Coco also played a really good match and I definitely saw why she's No 3 in the world right now. She played really well. I do think I got outplayed today but I guess I have no shame in saying that and looking forward to working to try to get better."

Jannik Sinner speaks after winning second match of comeback

17:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Jannik Sinner after beating Jesper de Jong 6-4 6-2:

“It was a completely different match to the first one, different conditions. I started very well and then I had a big drop. He started playing a little better and I had to understand what was going on. Fortunately I broke him on 4-4 again, which gave me the confidence to continue. The second set went how it went. He hurt himself, it was obvious. We all hope it’s nothing too serious.”

On facing Francisco Cerundolo next in the last-16:

“Of course last time I played here, I lost against him on this court. Let’s see. He’s an amazing player. He’s having an amazing season. Making a great tournament the week before here. It’s gonna be tough. I have to raise my level if I want to keep it even. Let’s see. These are exactly the kind of challenges I need. I’m trying to understand where my game is. It’s gonna be a good challenge and a good test for me. We’ll see how it goes.”

Jannik Sinner through at Italian Open

17:06 , Jamie Braidwood

Jannik Sinner makes it two wins out of two at the Italian Open as he moves past Jesper de Jong 6-4 6-2. The Dutchman was hurt near the end of the second set after falling on his wrist, which made it pretty comfortable for the World No 1.

He’ll face Francisco Cerundolo next for a place in the quarter-finals. Cerundolo was the last player to beat Sinner at the Italian Open, in 2023. That will be a true test for the returning Sinner in Rome.

Emma Raducanu outclassed by Coco Gauff but ‘heading in right direction

16:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu was taught a lesson on clay as Coco Gauff underlined her quality on clay with a dominant straight-sets win to reach the Italian Open quarter-finals.

The World No 3 raced to a 6-1 6-2 win over Raducanu, requiring just 79 minutes to progress to the Rome quarters for the third time as the American continues to build form ahead of the start of the French Open. After reaching the final of the Madrid Open, Gauff has won eight of her last nine matches, with her only defeat coming to World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Raducanu had won three matches in a row to reach the last-16 in Rome for the first time - beating qualifier Maya Joint, lucky loser Jil Teichmann and Veronika Kudermetova - but former French Open finalist Gauff represented a step up in class and displayed her impressive court-coverage and aggressive shot-making on the surface.

Coco Gauff a 'step up in quality' for Emma Raducanu

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu had beaten Australian qualifier Maya Joint, Swiss lucky loser Jil Teichmann and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova to reach the fourth round but Coco Gauff was unquestionably a step up in quality.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, the 22-year-old Briton had her moments in gusty conditions and a scorching forehand return to save match point was one of a number of highlight-reel winners.

But none of them came at critical junctures of the contest, with Raducanu unable to convert any of her three break opportunities, while she won just 47 per cent of points on her first serve in Rome.

Emma Raducanu to head to French Open next

16:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu has not played at the French Open since 2022, as she missed 2023 after undergoing hand and wrist surgeries and was absent in 2024 after deciding to focus on the grass court season.

She has played more matches on clay in 2025 so should be more confident. Although she will be unseeded for the French Open draw, even though she is set to rise to 42nd in the world.

The French Open main draw for men’s and women’s singles begins on Sunday 25 May.

'There’s a lot to build on for Raducanu'

15:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Tim Henman on what Emma Raducanu can take from her run to the Italian Open last-16 ahead of her return to the French Open later this month.

“It wasn’t the result or the performance she wanted today but I think Gauff had a lot to say about that. Raducanu didn’t have the opportunity to dictate because Gauff was hitting so aggressively from the back of the court.

“Raducanu’s clay-court season so far has been very positive. The clay courts at Roland Garros are the truest, they are the courts where you can take it early. I think that will suit her more.

“She’s heading in the right direction. She’s 42 in the live rankings. A number in my mind is 32 for pre-Wimbledon.”

Tim Henman gives his verdict on Gauff's win over Raducanu

15:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Tim Henman believes Coco Gauff handled the conditions better than Emma Raducanu and won the big games, with the scoreline not reflecting the match.

“As Gauff said, it wasn’t easy out there,” Henman says on Sky Sports. “It was heavy, it was hot, there was clay blowing around. When you look at the scoreline, 6-1 6-2, it looks straight-forward but there were a couple of long games.

“On those occasions, it was Gauff who came through. She won those big points, the long points, and it gave her the foundation to dominate the match. Gauff is building confidence.

“Emma looked over in our direction and said, ‘it’s so heavy’. For me the biggest area of difference between Raducau and Gauff is the explosive speed out from the corners. Raducanu didn’t look as comfortable.

“It was a great performance from Gauff. There’s a lot to build on for Raducanu.”

Coco Gauff speaks to Sky Sports after racing to victory

15:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Coco Gauff grades her performance at an ‘A’ in beating Emma Raducanu 6-2 6-1 in the Italian Open last-16.

“Tough conditions, super windy, and this court is really dry compared to the other ones. Emma is a tough opponent no matter the surface. I’m really happy with how I played today.

“My game is getting better every match. Madrid was a step in the right direction. I lost in the finals and I’m hoping to redeem myself today.

“My forehand was a big weapon today. It set me up for a lot of short balls, a lot of good points. I would say that’s going to help me the most.”

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Coco Gauff 6-1 6-2 Emma Raducanu

15:39 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff converts her second match point to reach the quarter-finals! Raducanu goes long on the forehand return on the second match point.

Gauff was too good today. She’s through to the quarter-finals in Rome for the third time and her greater experience and class on the clay was clear today.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-5 Coco Gauff

15:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff will serve for a place in the quarter-finals and the American wins the first point as she blasts a forehand at her opponent and the Briton can’t adjust her hands at the net.

Raducanu finds the back of the baseline and gets back to 30-30, but Gauff finds a strong first serve and forehand combination and it brings up match point for the first time.

Raducanu trashes away the forehand return to save! We saw a bit of that at the end of the first set, too.

Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-5 Coco Gauff* - Gauff breaks!

15:33 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu’s forehand gives up a couple of errors in a row as Gauff finds excellent depth to the baseline, and it brings up two break points.

And Gauff gets the break, that could well be the match. The ball sat up for Raducanu to strike the backhand crosscourt but Gauff read it and was there to put the volley into the open court.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-4 Coco Gauff

15:29 , Jamie Braidwood

The ball sits up for Gauff to thunder another forehand winner. She looks to be coasting towards a routine hold, but Raducanu digs in and puts away a flying forehand winner of her own into the corner to get back to deuce.

And Raducanu will have the chance to break back! Gauff drags the backhand wide. Raducanu looked to work an opening behind the forehand but with gap there for the backhand down the line, the 22-year-old puts it wide.

With the conditions getting tougher and the wind picking up the clay on the court, Gauff gets her hold to back up the break. Raducanu went long on the return and the door is closed.

Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-3 Coco Gauff* - Gauff breaks!

15:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff wins a couple of key points at the start of the fifth game. Raducanu nets on the drop shot after Gauff stays solid on the baseline, then Raducanu misses a forehand with Gauff staying resolute.

Raducanu makes another error - going long on the forehand - and it brings up two break points for Gauff. Brilliant movement from Gauff to reach a Raducanu drops shot, and she makes the volley across the net.

Raducanu can’t keep the pick-up inside the lines and Gauff breaks first in the second set.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-2 Coco Gauff

15:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu wins the first point against the Gauff serve but can’t take advantage as she nets on the forehand crosscourt.

Gauff holds with another array of shots that show her control and accuracy, directing the forehand winner before landing a serve onto the line that Raducanu can’t return.

Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-1 Coco Gauff*

15:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Another gutsy hold from Raducanu. Her game didn’t start well, as Gauff went for a smash, missed it, but then saw Raducanu’s lob drift long.

A couple of Gauff returns drift out, before the American nets on the forehand. There have not been too many of those errors, but Raducanu takes it as she edges ahead again in this second set.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 1-1 Coco Gauff

15:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu can’t put any pressure on Gauff’s serve, as the American finds some good accuracy. A first-serve out wide is followed by a forehand winner from Gauff. Too good, and she holds to love.

Emma Raducanu 1-6 1-0 Coco Gauff*

15:06 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu holds! That’s very important, and coach Mark Petchey is urging Raducanu to smile after Gauff puts her return into the net. Raducanu breaks into a grin.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 Coco Gauff

15:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu has gone off court for a quick break ahead of the second set. She will need to stay aggressive, and holding serve to start the second is a must.

Or she needs to hope that Gauff’s level dips. Raducanu, of course, came from behind to win in the previous round.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 Coco Gauff - Gauff wins first set

14:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff gets it done! The American finds a wonderful backhand pass and then lands a first serve that Raducanu can’t return on the fifth set point.

A commanding first set from Gauff, but there were some good signs in that last game as Raducanu went big on the returns .

But it’s been too good from Gauff so far.

Emma Raducanu 1-5 Coco Gauff

14:57 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s been relentless and very impressive from Gauff, as she thunders down another ace to bring up three set points.

But Raducanu has made some good moments in this set, such as that angled forehand winner to save the first set point, and she just needs to hang on here.

That will help - Raducanu lands another big forehand to save set point two, and then another to save the third! Lovely shot from Raducanu to open the racket and go down the line.

Raducanu goes big on the forehand again, taking on the serve and bringing up a break point. Gauff saves, as Raducanu nets on the run.

There will be a fourth set point, as Raducanu goes long on the return. But Raducanu goes for the return winner again, and lands another big forehand.

Deuce again.

Emma Raducanu 1-5 Coco Gauff* - Gauff breaks!

14:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Wonderful play from Gauff to get into a 0-30 lead against the Raducanu serve, as she moves in against the Raducanu slice and puts away a deft drop shot.

It’s followed by a double fault from Raducanu, which brings up three break points for Gauff - and surely a de facto set point too.

Raducanu can’t find a first serve, and Gauff lands a series of blows behind that brilliant backhand. Raducanu finally squeezes out an error and Gauff breaks again.

High level from Gauff.

*Emma Raducanu 1-4 Coco Gauff

14:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff looks to be relentless again as she marches into a 40-0 lead on serve. But as the breeze picks up and she throws a double fault into the net, Raducanu is brought back to 40-30.

But Gauff presses again and with Raducanu on the back foot, Gauff puts away the smash over the net to move into a 4-1 lead.

Emma Raducanu 1-3 Coco Gauff*

14:41 , Jamie Braidwood

On deuce, Gauff’s forehand goes a little loose, but she replies with another excellent backhand winner down the line.

Raducanu responds with a forehand winner crosscourt, wrong-footing Gauff, but the American is relentless on the backhand and saves another game point.

Raducanu this time gets on the board as Gauff nets. Fair play to Raducanu, Gauff is playing so aggressively and she’s had to work to get on the board.

Emma Raducanu 0-3 Coco Gauff

14:37 , Jamie Braidwood

After a chance in the last game, it will be important for Raducanu to get onto the board here behind serve.

An excellent forehand strike from Raducanu gets her to 30-0, but Gauff replies with the backhand winner.

That’s too good again from Gauff, working into the court and then putting away the forehand winner.

30-30. Raducanu misses the baseline by a couple of inches and Gauff will have a chance to break again.

Raducanu saves well, staying in the point as Gauff attacked and directing the backhand onto the baseline.

*Emma Raducanu 0-3 Coco Gauff

14:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Raducanu wins an excellent point, turning defence into attack by staying patient and opening the angle for the forehand winner.

And there will be a break point for Raducanu, as she fires the return into Gauff’s feet. Gauff goes for the drop shot but isn’t able to do enough with the nudge volley, that clipped the net cord. Gauff puts the lob into the court.

Ace from Gauff. And that’s a great hold for the American. Raducanu can’t keep the return in on game point.

Emma Raducanu 0-2 Coco Gauff* - Gauff breaks!

14:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff shows good defence and pushes Raducanu wide to force an error on the forehand. Gauff then steps it up on the forehand and on the power baseline game. Too much for Raducanu.

It brings up three break points. Gauff goes just wide on the backhand, but she is moving Raducanu around the court as if on a string.

Raducanu can’t pick up the deep return and Gauff breaks early.

*Emma Raducanu 0-1 Coco Gauff

14:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Gauff’s serve is going to be key today and if the level drops on the second Raducanu is sure to take aim on the returns.

Raducanu steps up the power on the forehand and forces an error from Gauff’s. But the American then fires an ace and Raducanu blasts wide.

Emma Raducanu vs Coco Gauff

14:13 , Jamie Braidwood

The players are out in court on a sunny day in Rome. Coco Gauff wins the toss and chooses to serve first.

To underline Gauff’s greater experience on clay, the Madrid finalist is bidding to reach the semi-finals in Rome for a third time, while Raducanu is playing in the last-16 for the first time.

Italian Open draw ahead of Raducanu vs Gauff

14:12 , Jamie Braidwood

The winner of this match will take on either seventh seed Mirra Andreeva or Clara Tauson in the quarter-finals. As the draw works out, World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka is also in this half and would be a potential semi-final opponent. She plays Marta Kostyuk for the second tournament in a row.

What Emma Raducanu said about Coco Gauff ahead of Italian Open match

14:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Interesting to hear Coco Gauff say that she thinks Emma Raducanu has the game to be a “great clay-court” player. Raducanu believes she is still in the learning stages when it comes to the surface, and made it clear that she thinks Gauff has a lot more experience on clay than she does.

Raducanu also did not know that her win over Veronika Kudermetova in the previous round set up a match with Gauff. “She’s a great competitor,” Raducanu said when she found out. “I’m playing pretty good tennis right now and she is going to be a great test, she’s made the French Open final so she’s great on this surface.”

What Coco Gauff said about Emma Raducanu before Italian Open match

14:05 , Jamie Braidwood

“She’s obviously a great player and the last time we played, it was a tough match,” Gauff said, referencing her straight-sets win over Raducanu at the Australian Open in 2023.

“It’s going to be a different matchup on clay here, but I think she has the game to be a great clay-court player.

“Obviously, a great player in general, but especially on clay. So it’s going to be a tough match and I’m looking forward to it and hopefully I can come out with the win.”

Game, set and match! Miami champion Jakub Mensik gets the job done against Fabian Marozsan, winning a second-set tiebreak to progress to the last-16 with a 6-4 7-6 (2) victory.

That means the blockbuster meeting between Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff will be starting on schedule and the players will be taking to court shortly.

Jakub Mensik served for the match against Fabian Marozsan, only for the Hungarian to stay alive and break back against the young Czech.

Mensik leads 6-4 5-5 but will need to refocus after being so close to the finish line.

Emma Raducanu highlights progress on clay

13:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Key to Emma Raducanu’s game is her return and taking up aggressive shots behind her forehand and the 22-year-old explained has she has tweaked her game on clay during her Italian Open run.

“I’m happy with the variety that I have on my shots, I’m able to return from two different positions up and back, which is new. I’ve adopted the back more in the last two matches and it’s helped me get into the point.

“But I still think I can be better out of the corners and moving, sometimes I feel a bit caught out still.”

Emma Raducanu on figuring out her form on clay

13:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu says she is still finding her feet on clay but there have been signs at the Italian Open that playing on the slower surface is suiting her.

"I still don't feel really comfortable [on clay]," the 22-year-old Raducanu said after her win over Jil Teichmann earlier in the tournament.

"I guess in a way it helps I have to be super focused on every single point, get my feet right and try not to fall over. I think I'm slowly finding my feet."

Italian Open scores

13:04 , Jamie Braidwood

Miami champion Jakub Mensik has taken the first set 6-4 against Fabian Marozsan on the Grand Stand Arena, breaking his opponent in the final game.

That’s significant because Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff will follow that match.

Elsewhere, Tommy Paul has set up a last-16 match with Alex de Minaur after beating Tomas Machac.

But Naomi Osaka is out after American Peyton Stearns resisted a comeback from the former World No 1. Stearns won a deciding tiebreak to win 6-4 3-6 7-6 in an epic on Centre Court.

Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff's last meeting in 2023

12:55 , Jamie Braidwood

It feels a long time ago now, and a lot has changed since Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff met in the second round of the Australian Open in 2023.

For one, Raducanu was the grand slam winner, with Gauff only winning her own US Open title last that season in New York.

Gauff had more experience, though, despite being a year younger, and was ranked more than 70 places above Raducanu as she won 6-3 7-6 (4).

Raducanu has made progress this season, reaching the Miami Open quarter-finals, and she is starting to be more competitive against the best in the world.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils were involved in a heated handshake as the players argued over a contentious body shot following their Italian Open clash in Rome.

Frenchman Fils progressed to the fourth round after coming from behind to defeat the Greek Tsitsipas 2-6 6-4 6-2, with Fils putting away a forehand winner on match point.

But there was tension at the net as the players went to shake hands, with Fils and Tsitsipas exchanging words and the umpire stepping in as the discussion appeared to become more animated.

Italian Open: Alex de Minaur through in straight sets

12:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Alex de Minaur is the first winner of the day and is through to the last-16 of the men’s draw after a 6-4 6-4 win over the lucky loser Hugo Dellien.

The Australian has been very consistent this season and is the only player on the men’s tour to reach the last-16 of every ATP 1000 event this year.

The seventh seed will play either Tommy Paul or Tomas Machac for a place in the quarter-finals.

Jannik Sinner enjoys triumphant return from doping ban

12:15 , Jamie Braidwood

World No 1 Jannik Sinner made a solid return from his three-month doping ban by beating Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4 before an adoring home crowd at the Italian Open.

It was Sinner's first match in more than 100 days, since he won his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.

"Amazing feeling. I have waited quite long for this moment," Sinner said. "I am very happy to be back."

There weren't too many signs of rust and it didn't take long for Sinner to start crushing his groundstrokes on or near the lines. When the Italian broke for 3-1 in the first set, the crowd inside Campo Centrale sang "Ole, ole, ole, Sin-ner, Sin-ner."

He returns to face Dutchman Jesper de Jong in the third round today.

Coco Gauff coming into form ahead of French Open

11:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Coco Gauff had not reached a final of an individual event since last season’s WTA Finals until she turned up in Madrid and stormed to the title match, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff thrashed Iga Swiatek 6-1 6-1 in an eye-catching result ahead of the French Open, as well as a 7-5 6-1 win over seventh seed Mirra Andreeva. She pushed World No 1 Sabalenka pretty close in the final, but lost 6-3 7-6.

Gauff has made it to the quarter-finals or further at the French Open in the last four years, making the final in 2022 and the semi-finals in 2024, where she lost to Swiatek both times.

By contrast, Raducanu has only appeared at the French Open once, where she was knocked out in the second round, although her form on the clay surface looks to be improving.

British No 1 on the line for Emma Raducanu

11:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu will retake the British No 1 ranking from Katie Boulter should she beat Coco Gauff and reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open today.

Raducanu is currently 42nd in the WTA’s live rankings after progressing to the last-16 in Rome. Her live rankings total is 1259 and will go to 1354 if she wins another match.

That will move her above Boulter’s total of 1331 after she lost in the opening round of the Italian Open.

Raducanu could also earn a seeded position for the French Open if she reaches the semi-finals in Rome.

Coco Gauff, meanwhile, is guaranteed to move up to World No 2, with Iga Swiatek slipping to No 4 ahead of the French Open.

Jack Draper: 'I get out of bed and I feel so angry some days'

11:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Jack Draper suggested his new ranking of World No 5 contributed to his anger and frustration on court during his win over Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva yesterday.

Draper said: “I’m human. We don’t always wake up out of bed feeling great. I’m the same. I get out of bed and I feel so angry some days, and I’ve got to play a tennis match and I’ve got to lose points and I’ve got to go through those emotional ups and downs, even with that going on.

“I think I’ve played a lot of tennis, a lot of matches, and I’m getting used to that. I’m in a new position now, my ranking is obviously going up, and I’m getting to compete week in, week out and play lots of matches.

“It’s taking some getting used to for me from a mental and physical side, and I want to keep going, but it’s sometimes difficult to always be perfect.”

Emma Raducanu scolds opponent for trying to ‘throw me off’ with medical timeout

10:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu said she was proud of how she kept her focus as she came from behind to defeat Veronika Kudermetova and reach the last-16 of the Italian Open.

After losing the first set, Raducanu dropped just one game as the Briton surged to a 5-7 6-0 6-1 victory and booked a clash with fourth seed Coco Gauff in Rome.

Raducanu was pleased with how she bounced back from the first set and didn’t let Kudermetova back into the contest, believing the former World No 9’s medical timeout late in the second set was an attempt to “throw me off”.

Kudermetova went off court for several minutes as Raducanu was forced to wait, but the 22-year-old kept her composure and highlighted the “big progress” she has made.

Emma Raducanu bounces back against Veronika Kudermetova

10:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu set up an Italian Open last-16 meeting with Coco Gauff as she came from behind to beat Veronika Kudermetova in Rome.

After losing the first set despite serving at 5-4 up, Raducanu bounced back in emphatic fashion, seeing off her Russian opponent 5-7 6-0 6-1 in a contest lasting just over two-and-a-half hours.

The 22-year-old Briton told Sky Sports: "For me the best thing about today I think was recovering after losing the first set and having serve for it.

"I think I threw in a pretty poor game at 5-4 serving, but I felt under pressure on Veronika's returns, she was literally red-lining everything and it was all going in and I was like 'I don't know where to serve' and it's not a nice feeling to have.

"I'm so happy with how I didn't let the rest of the match get away with me. I think that's a big progress compared to maybe the matches I played in the past."
