Emma Raducanu tests positive for Covid-19 and withdraws from exhibition event

Emma Raducanu has tested positive for Covid-19 and has subsequently withdrawn from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

The US Open champion was due to take on Belinda Bencic in the exhibition event but will now self-isolate in Abu Dhabi.

“I was very much looking forward to playing in front of the fans here in Abu Dhabi, but unfortunately after testing positive for Covid-19, I will have to postpone until the next opportunity,” Raducanu said.

“I’m isolating as per rules and hopefully will be able to get back on court soon.”

The event would have formed part of Raducanu's preparations for the Australian Open, which begins on January 17.

Despite testing positive for Covid-19, Raducanu is still expected to fly to Melbourne as scheduled after completing her isolation period.

"Mubadala World Tennis Championship organisers regrettably confirm that Emma Raducanu has tested positive for COVID-19 and has withdrawn from this week's Championship," said a statement on social media.

“Emma is now isolating and following all necessary protocols. We wish her a quick recovery and hope to see her back on the court soon."

The news comes after it was confirmed Raducanu is on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

She is the big favourite to land the gong after a stunning breakthrough year which included her incredible US Open triumph - achieved without dropping a set.

The 19-year-old is joined on the shortlist by Tyson Fury, Adam Peaty, Raheem Sterling, Dame Sarah Storey and Tom Daley.
