Emma Raducanu: British No1 into Citi Open semi-finals after Maria Sakkari victory

Emma Raducanu is into the semi-finals at the Citi Open as she defeated Maria Sakkari in straight sets in Washington, DC.

The British No1, who reclaimed her place at the top of the national rankings with her last-16 win over Naomi Osaka in the previous round, came through 6-4 7-5.

She is aiming for a first WTA final since her remarkable US Open triumph back in 2021.

Raducanu defeated seventh seed Marta Kostyuk in the opening round before beating the four-time major champion Osaka in straight sets on Thursday.

She is also in action in the semi-finals of the doubles competition alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and they face Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai, the second seeds, overnight.

Raducanu came back from 5-2 down in the second set to defeat Sakkari, the Greek wildcard, and she tees up a last-four encounter with either the Dane Clara Tauson or Anna Kalinskaya.

The 22-year-old said that she was slowly building confidence back on the American acrylic.

"I've been doing a lot of good work,” Raducanu told Sky Sports.

“Little by little as you get results, you build confidence, but the amount of work I'm doing behind the scenes, to have that banked, you know you've done it. It takes a little bit of pressure off the results."

The scorching conditions in the capital took their toll as Raducanu needed medical attention during the match.

"It was brutal today," she said of the weather. "It was a long match, the first set was over an hour. You just have to enjoy suffering and leave it all out there on the court.

"Maria played an incredible match and the conditions really suit her with the liveliness of her game.

"I need to prepare [for the doubles] and get out of the heat. I felt a bit wobbly at the back end of the second set."
