Emma Hayes singles out 'exceptional' performance in Chelsea's win over Brighton

Emma Hayes has called on Chelsea to be more ruthless in attack after they battled to a 3-1 win against Brighton.

The home side went ahead in the ninth minute when Guro Reiten converted Fran Kirby’s pass, before Sam Kerr added a second with a well-placed header.

However, Brighton pulled a goal back just three minutes into the second half through Danielle Carter and Chelsea wasted plenty of chances to put the game to bed.

They eventually did in the 80th minute through Beth England but Hayes, though happy with the overall performance, was left slightly concerned with their profligacy in front of goal.

"It should have been done and dusted a lot sooner,” she said.

“We had a lot of good transition moments in the first half, but I thought it was a good performance in the first half from the team.

“We created good chances, but I don’t think we executed them.”

After an opening-day defeat to Arsenal, Chelsea have steadily got back on track and this is their third league win on the spin.

On Wednesday, they secured their place in the FA Cup semi-finals, where they travel to the holders Manchester City, while this week will see them start their Champions League campaign.

Competing on all fronts means Hayes must have all her big players fit and firing and she was encouraged by the performance of Reiten against Brighton and England’s cameo.

“I thought it was a wonderful performance from Guro Reiten,” she added.

“She was exceptional today, got her first goal of the season. Then the ball from Fran [Kirby] to Sam [Kerr] is out of this world.

“At 2-0 we were comfortable, but we started the second half like we were still in the changing room. We gave away a sloppy goal. Our game management beyond that limited them to two shots. Third goal was the least we deserved. Brilliant impact from the bench again. Especially pleased for Beth [England], that will do her confidence the world of good.”
