Emma Hayes promises Chelsea FC will deliver ‘performance of their lives’ to reach Champions League final

Chelsea Women boss Emma Hayes has promised her side will produce the “performance of their lives” as they try to overturn a first-leg deficit to reach the Champions League final next weekend.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 in the away leg of their clash with Bayern Munich yesterday, leaving the tie nicely poised ahead of next week’s return at Kingsmeadow.

Chelsea have never reached the final, having been knocked out on each of their two previous semi-final appearances.

The game in Munich came only four days after a huge WSL clash with Manchester City, where a draw kept Hayes’ side in control of the title race, and the 44-year-old admitted that fixture may have taken its toll.

“I think everybody has to respect that when you play the game we played against Man City on Wednesday night, that took a lot emotionally out of the group,” she told the club website.

“So, to have to come here and play our second-biggest game of the season, I think that’s extremely difficult.

“Yes, Bayern are excited by the result today, but trust me, I will make sure the team puts in the performance of their life next week.”
