Emma Hayes praises Chelsea Women’s defence in Brighton victory

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was delighted her team managed to come out on top against Brighton as they extended their unbeaten run with a 1-0 win.

The Blues haven’t lost in the Barclays FA Women's Super League since January 2019 and Sam Kerr kept that record intact with her seventh goal of the season at the People’s Pension Stadium.

Emma Hayes’ side sit second in the table, three points behind Manchester United with a game in hand and the manager was pleased have got the better of Hope Powell’s side.

“They have been a bogey team for us a bit last year,” Hayes said. “I’m as delighted with this win as I am any win because to break her teams down, they put in such a shift.

“I thought we deserved to win the game but when you don’t take a second goal you have to defend properly.”

It’s a hectic month for Chelsea who have midweek Champions League matches to contend with as well as the league.

But the Blues managed to hold off pressure from Brighton to seal all three points and Hayes knew the importance of winning tough games.

"Towards the end I thought we were still in control,” Hayes added. “Yes, at one nil anything can happen in the game and you have to defend those situations properly and the back four did their job. They dealt with their clearances well.

“If you want to compete for titles you have to win games like these and that’s something that’s clear from the off and I’m so over the moon for them.

“It was tough conditions here today and I’m really, really happy with the three points.”
