Emirates announces Airbus A380 to return to Glasgow Airport in 2020

Emirates airline has announced that the iconic Airbus A380 will be making a return to Glasgow Airport in 2020.

The firm has confirmed that the service will be available from the beginning of March.

With £8m in revisions being made to the runway system and pier infrastructure in 2019, the airport is now fully equipped to accommodate the some 500 ton, double decker behemoth.

Mark Johnston, Managing Director at Glasgow Airport said “the decision to make such a significant investment was a bold one, however, the return of this iconic aircraft to daily service underlines our continued ambition.”

Johnston continued: “Our Dubai double daily is Scotland’s leading long-haul route, so it’s fitting that the world’s largest commercial passenger aircraft will play a part.”

There is room on board to comfortably hold over 480 passengers, 14 of whom will be hosted in the notoriously lavish private suites in first class.

Alongside the passengers, Emirates’ SkyCargo aboard the plane will continue to carry key Glaswegian exports. Goods such as salmon, whisky and cheese will travel all across the globe to destinations including South Africa and Korea.

The aircraft will accompany one of the Boeing 777’s already being used on the Dubai route and will be in operation year round.
