Emily Ratajkowski slams #BlackoutTuesday posts as 'worst kind of virtue-signalling'

Emily Ratajkowski has slammed people that are posting black squares on social media as part of #BlackoutTuesday.

The 28-year-old model responded to today's global movement where millions have turned the Internet black to make a stand against racism.

In her posts she argued that 'clogging up' the Internet with black squares 'isn't helpful'.

As the United States is gripped by unrest following George Floyd's death in police custody, millions around the globe stood in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Among the countless social media supporters who posted for #BlackoutTuesday were Rihanna, Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner and Britney Spears.

On the same day, leaders in the music industry vowed to stop business and encouraged labels to 'disconnect' in support of the movement.

In a series of social media posts shared today, Emily appeared to slam the movement and argued that the 'media and MAGA dudes' are not blacking out.

"This is what you call amplifying a movement & black voices," she wrote alongside a video that scrolled through a collection of black social media squares.

"So easy to post a black square. I’m seeing people who haven’t posted in YEARS come on to post a black square. Your silence was embarrassing and now you can feel good about yourself while doing the bare minimum. This is the worst kind of virtual signaling. (1)"

In another Twitter post she wrote: "And it’s straight up dangerous. The mainstream media isn’t blacking out today, the MAGA dudes in my mentions aren’t blacking out today.

"Clogging up the only reliable news source and communication channel ISNT HELPFUL. (2)"

Emily also reiterated the messages on her Instagram story and also called people who haven't posted anything else in regards to the movement as 'embarrassing'.

Emily has received a mixed response on social media over her recent thoughts on Blackout Tuesday.

Although some followers agreed with Emily, an overwhelming amount of fans argued that 'people trying to unify' shouldn't be criticised.

Others pointed out that even though people may have just posted a black square, they could be doing more that she is unaware of.

"Just because all you see is a black square, doesn’t mean people aren’t doing their part," argued one follower.
