Emily Maitlis calls Hull 'hell' in Newsnight gaffe

This is the moment Emily Maitlis mispronounced Hull as "hell" on BBC's Newsnight.

The presenter was about to interview Alan Johnson on Tuesday evening when she made the unfortunate mistake.

"Former Health Secretary Alan Johnson joins us down the line from Hell," said Ms Maitlis.

"From Hull," Ms Maitlis quickly added as she laughed to herself at the error. "I'm never going to recover from that now, am I," she added.

The Newsnight presenter later shared a clip of the gaffe on Twitter and said: "For clarity I do know hull is not hell. It’s rather lovely."

Social media users thanked Ms Maitlis for giving them the "best laugh" after witnessing her error.

"Second laugh of the evening...Emily saying 'live from hell' rather than Hull," wrote one person on Twitter.

Others described the error as a "Freudian" slip of the tongue.

It comes after BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood left viewers in hysterics after she accidentally said there were lots of "doggers" in Greenwich Park.

Ms Kirkwood was quick to correct her slip of the tongue, adding: "Not doggers of course... lots of dog walkers and joggers."

Last year Carrie Gracie appeared to drop the C-bomb as she stumbled over Jeremy Hunt's name while delivering a bulletin on the UK Government’s response to Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's hunger strike on Monday’s News 24.
