Emily is top name for Renfrewshire baby girls as Charlie, Leo and Oliver share boys' crown

Emily was the most popular name registered for baby girls in Renfrewshire last year while three names shared the top spot for boys.

Oliver, Charlie, and Leo were the most common boys' names registered in the council area.

Fourteen girls born in the Renfrewshire area were named Emily, while 14 boys were named Charlie, Leo, and Oliver respectively.

The latest statistics were published by the National Records of Scotland this week.

Other girls' names that proved popular included Hannah and Freya - which were given to 11 children born in Renfrewshire respectively - as well as Isla, Mia, Lily, and Sofia.

The names Noah and Harris were each given to 13 boys, while Mason, Archie, Alfie, and James were high up the table.

It means trends have changed a bit in the past couple of years, with Jack and Olivia being the most common names for kids born in Renfrewshire back in 2018.

Across Scotland, Isla snatched the top spot for the most popular girls' name for the first time since 2016, with Olivia having held onto the title for four years running.

But Jack has shown no sign of shifting as it held onto the lead for the 13th year on the trot.

Ten girls were named Isla in Renfrewshire last year, while just nine were called Jack.

The year 2020 saw the highest level of different names being given to newborns.

Of the 23,968 girls registered across Scotland, there were 4,347 different names and, for the 22,387 boys registered, there were 3,375 different names.

The largest increases seen in the top 100 boys' list were Roman - which jumped 68 places to 33rd - and Finley, which rose 48 places to 88th.

Meanwhile, the girls' name Maeve made a huge leap of 130 places to 86th, with many parents seemingly drawing inspiration from one of the lead characters in the Netflix series Sex Education.
