A writer for the Netflix series Emily in Paris has publicly told Michaela Coel it was “wrong” to see her snubbed by the Golden Globes.
The absence of Coel and her universally acclaimed BBC series I May Destroy You was one of the biggest surprises at today’s Golden Globes nominations announcement.
The critically drubbed Emily in Paris, meanwhile, took home two nods – for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for star Lily Collins.
On Twitter, Emily in Paris staff writer Deborah Copaken spoke out on Coel’s snub, tweeting directly at the British star.
“Dear @MichaelaCoel: I was a writer on Emily in Paris, but your show was my favourite show since the dawn of TV, & this is just wrong,” Copaken wrote. “I loved I May Destroy You, and I thank you, personally, for giving us your heart, your mind, your resilience, & your humour.”

I May Destroy You, which Coel wrote, directed and starred in, was one of the most successful TV shows of 2020. It starred Coel as a London novelist who grapples with the aftermath of sexual assault.
Emily in Paris, in contrast, faced poor reviews and endless mockery when it debuted on Netflix at the end of last year. French critics were especially withering, with many claiming the show’s depiction of Paris was “insulting”.
This year’s Golden Globes have sparked a number of controversies already, from the decision to ban the acclaimed US drama Minari from major categories as its characters predominantly speak in Korean, to James Corden’s nomination for his widely condemned performance in The Prom.
